BOWERS Family

First Generation

1. Green1 BOWERS(3) #1722 was born in North Carolina about 1775. Green died BET 1850 AND 1860 in Daviess Co, Missouri.

He married Sarah (Sally) COOPER in North Carolina, about 1794. (Sarah (Sally) COOPER #1723.) Sarah was born in Granville Co., NC BET 1776 AND 1780. She was the daughter of Cannon (Kannon) COOPER and Sarah. Sarah died BET 1830 AND 1840. SOURCE: Family group sheet by Ada Bowers Olsen, Ogden, Utah, obtained from Walter M. Records have been found for several years between 1812 and 1820. He bought property on Little Cane Creek of Haw River (two plots of 91 acres and 81 acres} in 1819 from a Benjamin Bowers, which he sold to Allen Petty in 1822 and 1823. 1830 census Roane Co, TN: Bowers, Green 1m 0-4 y 1m 5-9 2m 10-14 1m 50-59 1f 5-9 1f 15-19 1f 50-59 1840 census Caldwell Co, MO: Bowers, Green 1m 10-14y 1m 60-69 1850 census Daviess Co, MO: Bowers, Green 75 m NC Miriam 59 f NH Daviess Co, MO marriage record filed 3 Jun 1841: Giles Bowers of Caldwell Co to Miriam Nash of Daviess Co, 23 Jan 1841. Since the 1850 census record shows Green and Miriam Bowers living in the same household, this marriage record is believed to be that of old Green Bowers. Also, Giles Bowers, son of Green, is in 1850 census for Caldwell Co with wife, Sarah, and children. Perhaps old Green's first name was Giles. About 30 records of Green Bowers were found in loose records at old courthouse, Kingston, TN consisting of jury duty and summons and judgements for nonpayment of bills.

Green BOWERS and Sarah (Sally) COOPER had the following children:

There are several Orange Co deeds, 1871-1880, where W. G. and Mary N. (or M. N.) Bowers are grantors and one in 1851 where William G. Bowers is the grantee. I believe this is William Green Bowers, son of William and Elizabeth, whose age should have been 35 in the 1860 census.

child 6 v. Green Willis BOWERS(7) #1728 was born in Orange Co., NC April 5, 1803. Green died March 12, 1849 in Daviess Co, Missouri, at 45 years of age. Bowers, Tulsa, Oklahoma, references James Mitchell Bowers family bible. Orange Co, NC marriage bond to William Cate, 1820. I suspect that Polly and William Cates stayed in Orange Co, NC, but have no definite proof. There are no William Cates of the right age in the 1820, 1830 and 1840 Orange Co censuses and no William and/or Mary (Polly) Cates of the right age in the 1850 census. One problem is the number of Williams and Marys and Pollys. These seem to have been the most popular names among the Cates families of Orange Co. In the 1860 census there are two Mary Cates, 60, heads of households, each with several children, but both these Marys are five years too old and no hints in the names of the children. In the 1870 census there are one Polly Cates, 66, and two Mary Cates, both 65. Polly and a Mary are heads of households and the other Mary is a pauper in the poorhouse. These three are the right ages, but there is nothing to suggest that any are the Mary (Polly) that we are seeking. There is also a Green Cates, 40, and Mary, 20, in the 1870 census in the same township as Polly and one of the Marys, who could be the son of our Polly, named after her father Green Bowers. There are no Williams and Marys or Pollys in Alamance Co, which was formed from Orange Co in 1849.

On 17 Nov the account was credited with $15.94 for cotton, leaving a balance due of $4.10. The second dated 26 April 1830 is the report of a road jury on which Giles served laying out a road connecting with Paint Rock Road. Most of the records relate to suits for nonpayment of debts. The last record found was dated 1833.

He likely left Roane Co after being charged with gaming in 1838. Notes by sheriff on warrants for his arrest 1838-1840 state that he could not be found in Roane Co. A petition filed 2 July 1851 by his brother, Benjamin, before Roane Co Circuit Court states that John Bowers went to Alabama.

He probably went to Alabama in 1838 after failing to appear in county court to testify for the State against his brothers, Levi and John, on charges of gambling, since in the 1840 census his brother David was in Sumter Co, AL, and his brother Jesse was in Dale Co, AL. Warrants for Marcus Simeon's arrest in 1839 and 1840 in Roane Co state that he could not be found in Roane Co. Marcus Simeon is not in Alabama census records for 1840, 1850 and 1860.
